Newport Beach Film Festival Irish Spotlight
24 Apr 2014 : Aisling Newton
The Newport Beach Film Festival that runs from Thursday, April 24 until May 1 will feature six Irish films at its 15th annual event.

Lance Daly's ‘Life's a Breeze’ will screen on Sunday, April 27 at the Edwards Big Newport Theatre. The film follows the story of a Dublin woman whose family surprises her with a home makeover that has her thrilled until she discovers they tossed her old mattress where she hid her life savings. When a physical search comes up empty, an ill-advised public appeal on the radio leads to a citywide hunt for the lost money. Produced by Daly and Macdara Kelleher, the film stars Kelly Thornton, Fionnula Flanagan, Pat Shortt and Eva Birthistle. Joining ‘Life’s A Breeze’ on Sunday is Kevin Glynn’s ‘Countdown’. ‘Countdown’ was filmed in Birr as part of the 48 hour film challenge and features Aron Hegarty and Olivia Minnock. Speaking ahead of his arrival in Newport, Glynn told IFTN: “I was particularly delighted to be selected again by this festival (previous entries include ‘Cairdeas’ and ‘The Great Kiss Heist’). It is a great honour and I am especially looking forward to seeing it on the Edwards Theatre screen. This festival presents an ideal opportunity to showcase my work. The festival is run by people with a huge love of film and a respect for the filmmaker.”

Other Irish films appearing at the festival include 'One Ocean: No Limits', which will screen on Saturday April 26, at 12.30pm. The 52min documentary follows a young Irish novice rower as he takes an unforgettable journey, rowing completely unassisted across the vast Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to Barbados as part of a crew of only six people. The film was produced and directed by Sarah McCann, who also performed major camera and editing roles. The film was co-edited by John Murphy and the final sound mix and online/grading took place in Gorilla Post-Production. Eoin Duffy’s ‘The Missing Scarf’ will screen on Monday, April 28. The animated black comedy explores some of life's common fears: fear of the unknown, failure, rejection and death. The sci-fi fantasy short was produced by Jamie Hogan and the music was composed by Tobias Norberg.

‘Irish Folk Furniture’, written and directed by Tony Donoghue, is an animated documentary about the repair and reuse of dismissed furniture. Produced by Cathal Black, the film will screen at three separate locations on Saturday, April 26. The final Irish short at the festival is ‘The Portrait’, which will screen on Sunday, April 27 at The Triangle and on Monday, April 28 at the Fashion Island Cinema.

Tickets are now on sale for the festival which hosts numerous free screenings, seminars and other events dotted throughout the week long celebration.
