Irish-Norwegian Film ‘A Thousand Times Good Night’ Opens Today
16 May 2014 : Aisling Newton
Erik Poppe’s ‘A Thousand Times Good Night’, which was made with the support of the Irish Film Board, opens in Irish cinemas today, May 16.

The film stars French actress Juliette Binoche in the leading role as Rebecca, one of the world’s top war photographers. On assignment while photographing a female suicide bomber in Kabul, she gets to near, and gets badly hurt. Back home another bomb drops. Her husband and daughters can no longer bear the thought of her dying while at work. She is given an ultimatum: Her work, or her family life. The choice seems obvious.

Filmed on location for seven weeks in Dublin, Morocco and Kabul, ‘A Thousand Times Good Night’ was co-produced by Jackie Larkin and Lesley McKimm in Newgrange Pictures as well as Norwegian-based Finn Gjerdrum and Stein Kave for Paradox. Speaking to IFTN, Larkin from Newgrange Pictures said: “The director Eric made the decision to move filming to Ireland and be true to the story by making the film through the English language. The challenge for us, along with the locations manager Dermot Cleary, was to find great areas to highlight the stark difference between the tranquillity of Ireland and the war torn regions of Afghanistan.”

Written by Harald Rosenlow Eeg, the film also features Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Oblivion), Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Commitments), Larry Mullen Jr. (Mission Impossible), Mads Ousdal (Jackpot), Chloe Annett (Casualty), and Irish actress’ Lauryn Canny (Amber) and Adrianna Cramer Curtis. Sofia Lindgren acted as editor on the film, John Christian Rosenlund as DOP and Armand Amar composed the music for the English language drama film.

Film Movement recently acquired US rights to ‘A Thousand Times Good Night’, which has first released in Norway in October. Global Screen, which is handling worldwide sales, also just inked deals in Canada (Northwest Pictures), Japan (Kadokawa), Australia (Regency), Denmark (Smile), Turkey (Yeni Bir Film), ex-Yugoslavia (Discovery), Bulgaria (Multivision) and Latin America (HBO).

Speaking about the films Irish release, Larkin said: “’A Thousand Times Good Night’ is a powerful and relevant piece of work. It’s a very contemporary story and I think a lot of females will relate to Rebecca’s struggle between her job and being a mother.”

Winner of the Special Grand Jury Prize at the Montreal World Film Festival, ‘A Thousand Times Good Night’ is at its heart a touching story about family, the ties that bind us, and what you are willing to lose in the search to be true to yourself. The film is made all the more authentic due to Poppe’s background as a war photographer.

Newgrange Pictures are currently financing two films; ‘My Name is Emily’, produced with Kathryn Kennedy and directed by Simon Fitzmaurice; and ‘Seeing Chris’, which will be shot in New York and directed by Tom Cairns.

Released by Arrow Films and Eclipse Pictures, the trailer for ’A Thousand Times Good Night’ can be viewed below:
