‘An Inspector Calls’ to be Adapted as 90-min Drama for BBC
24 Apr 2014 : Aisling Newton
Irish writer/director Aisling Walsh’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ is set to be adapted as a 90-minute drama for a BBC1 season of early 20th century British novels and plays.

The season was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One and Ben Stephenson, Controller of BBC Drama, which includes the literary adaption of JB Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’, as well as Ben Vanstone’s adaption of Laurie Lee’s childhood memoir ‘Cider With Rosie’, LP Hartley’s ‘The Go-Between’ and DH Lawrence’s ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’. All four will be adapted into 90-minute one-offs by the industry’s top directors and producers including ‘Line of Duty’ creator Jed Mercurio, ‘The Musketeers’ creator Adrian Hodges and Irish director Walsh.

IFTA and BAFTA winner Walsh, a Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology graduate, is best known for her 2003 feature film ‘Song for a Raggy Boy’ and previously worked on ‘Loving Miss Hatto’, ‘Trial & Retribution’, ‘Joyriders’ and the award winning mini-series ‘Room at the Top’. ‘An Inspector Calls’ is a story of social conscience and the crumbling of rigid Victorian values. The detective thriller, set in 1912, is being made by Greg Brenman’s indie Drama Republic, the production company behind the upcoming BBC dramas ‘The Honourable Woman’ and ‘Doctor Foster’.

Brenman, Drama Republic, said: “JB Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ is a timeless masterpiece that is as entertaining as it is meaningful. It is such an honour for us to be making this with the BBC.”

Casting is under way on all four projects, which are scheduled to begin shooting later this year.

BB1 Controller Moore said the season of films would “explore and contextualise the enormous changes in the way men and women lived in the 20th century. They all tell uniquely intense and personal stories about people living in Britain 100 years ago.”
