Irish Casting Round-Up
20 Mar 2014 : Aisling Newton
Irish actors Jack Reynor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Séainín Brennan have been lined up to take on prominent roles on our screens later this year.

Reynor has been cast in the new WWII movie ‘Girls’ Night Out’, set in 1940’s London, while Rhys Meyers will join the cast of the screen adaption of Irish writer Sebastian Barry’s ‘The Secret Scripture’. Northern Ireland actress Brennan has also just been confirmed for series two of ‘The Fall’.

‘Girls’ Night Out’ is a reimagining of VE Day in 1945, when Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were allowed out of Buckingham Palace for one night to join in the celebrations to mark the end of the war. The ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ actor will star alongside British actors Rupert Everett (Shrek) and Emily Watson (War Horse). Director Michael Hoffman, who filmed the 2009 biopic ‘The Last Station’, has toplined Dakota Fanning to play the role of Margaret. ‘Girls' Night Out’ is being produced by Ecosse Films, which specialises in movies based on real-life figures

Reynor is currently in Scotland filming for the movie adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ with fellow Irishman Michael Fassbender in the lead role. The Wicklow native will attend CinemaCon in Las Vegas next week to pick up his Rising Star Award alongside his co-star Nicola Peltz.

Rhys Meyers makes his return in ‘The Secret Scripture’ after a lengthy absence from the silver screen. Ireland’s leading filmmaker Thaddeus O’Sullivan has signed onto direct the movie adaption of the award-winning novel. Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave will play the lead roles in the movie, which is currently in pre-production and is expected to start shooting in June. Filming will take place over eight weeks on location in Wicklow and Sligo with an Irish crew – giving a further boost to the film industry as well as the Irish economy. Ferndale Films Noel Pearson, who was nominated for an Oscar for ‘My Left Foot’ in 1990, is set to produce the late Johnny Ferguson’s adaptation of Sebastian Barry's novel.

Rhys Meyers previously played the lead in Sky series ‘Dracula’ and appeared in Harald Zwart’s ‘The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones’.

Irish actress Brennan has confirmed she will be returning in season two of BBC Primetime drama ‘The Fall’. She will resume her role of Liz Tyler in the critically acclaimed thriller, alongside stars Jamie Dornan as Paul Spector and Gillian Anderson as Stella Gibson. Shooting is expected to run over four months with six episodes in the second series. Filming currently taking place on-location in Belfast.

Speaking of her return, Brennan said: “Every actress wants a character they can really get their teeth into and I’m very lucky that I get to do that with Liz. Allan Cubitt is a phenomenal writer and I'm over the moon to be working with him again”.

Brennan landed her first film project shortly after filming the first series of ‘The Fall’. ‘Dare to be Wild’ was based on the true story of Mary Reynolds, a young Irish woman who, in 2002 and against heavy odds, became the first Irish winner of the Chelsea Flower Show gold medal. Brennan has also been working on a new thriller set in a coastal town with Academy Award winner Oorlagh George (American Gangster).

In other casting news, young ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Art Parkinson, has been cast in the action film ‘San Andreas’. The twelve year old Irish actor from Moville, Co. Donegal, is best-known for playing the character Rickon Stark in HBO’s hit series ‘Game of Thrones’, as well as appearing in ‘Red Mist’ and Irish horror film ‘Dark Touch’ with Padraic Delaney. ‘San Andreas’ will be shot in Australia with Brad Peyton directing. The film will be produced by Tripp Vinson and Beau Flynn through his Flynn Picture Co. alongside New Line.
