Steven Spielberg’s next movie to be ‘American Sniper’
Veteran Hollywood director Steven Spielberg has chosen his next directing project: an adaptation of ‘American Sniper’, the bestselling autobiography from Navy Seal Chris Kyle. Actor Bradley Cooper is set to star and has been developing the project as a producer along with Andrew Lazar and Peter Morgan. The autobiography retells the exploits of Kyle who recorded the highest number of sniper kills for an American, earning himself the nickname al-Shaitan (“The Devil”) from Iraqi insurgents. Kyle recently made the news in America earlier this year when he was tragically killed at a shooting range by a fellow vet in February. Spielberg was also set to helm an adaptation of the sci-fi novel ‘Robopocalypse’, but the project was put on hold earlier this year. As well as acting as jury president for this year’s Cannes festival, Spielberg is also co-producing a third wartime mini-series for HBO, as well as developing Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon as mini-series. ‘American Sniper’ will begin production early next year.

Michael Mann’s upcoming film ‘Agincourt’ to get a rewrite
American director Michael Mann (The Insider, Heat, Public Enemies) is currently at work on his next project, an untitled thriller about cyber crime. However, while he waits to begin production on that film, one of his long in-development projects, the 15th century war story Agincourt, will be given a rewrite. Screenwriter Stuart Hazeldine has been hired to do a rewrite of the script for the in-development project, which is based on the book by Bernard Cornwell. Set in the 15th century, the story follows Nicholas Hook, who grows up under the rule of King Henry V, gets recognized as a skilled archer and goes to the Battle of Agincourt to fight for his country against the French. This will not be the first time Mann has directed a period piece, having directed ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ in 1992, which starred Daniel Day-Lewis. In relation to the aforementioned cyber crime thriller, the film is set to star Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Avengers Assemble) and Oscar-nominated Viola Davis (The Help, Doubt) with cameras due to begin rolling in June of this year.

Watch the trailer for ‘Dead Man Down’, released in Ireland today
Irish actor Colin Farrell’s latest film, ‘Dead Man Down’, hits Irish screens today. The film is directed by Niels Arden Oplev, the acclaimed director of the original ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and co-stars Noomi Rapace, Terrence Howard, and Dominic Cooper. The story centres on Victor (Farrell), a rising gangland player, who has infiltrated the crime empire run by ruthless kingpin Alphonse (Howard), with the single purpose of making Alphonse pay for destroying his once happy life. As he orchestrates his plan, Victor is seduced by Beatrice (Rapace), who threatens to expose his plans unless he helps her carry out her own campaign of retribution. Each fixated on avenging the past, they devise a violent and cathartic plan that could change their worlds forever.
