Galway Film Fleadh Launches Programme Full of IFTA-winners, Oscar-winners, and VIP Guests
27 Jun 2012 : By Eva Hall
Isabelle Huppert
IFTA-winning actor Aidan Gillen (Love/Hate, Game of Thrones) will join Cannes Festival Award-winning actress Isabelle Huppert (La Cérémonie, Law & Order) as well as a number of international and local filmmakers for the 24th Galway Film Fleadh this July.

‘Love/Hate’ star Gillen will be on hand to close the prestigious event on Sunday July 15, as his latest feature ‘Shadow Dancer’ has been officially selected as the send-off film for the festival this year. Gillen will accompany his ‘Shadow Dancer’ co-star Martin McCann at the Town Hall in Galway for the screening.

‘Shadow Dancer’ was directed by Oscar-winner James Marsh (Man on Wire), and tells the story of a Belfast mother who turns MI5 informant to protect her son after her involvement with the IRA goes awry.

Award-winning actress and multi César Award-nominee Isabelle Huppert will host a public interview on Sunday at the Fleadh, in association with the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA).

Paris-born Huppert has acted in over 90 films and television productions, and is considered one of France’s greatest acting talents. She has earned the most César Award nominations (13 in total) for an actress, and has been awarded Best Actress twice at the Cannes Film Festival. She has made her name in acclaimed films such as ‘The Ceremony’ (1995) and ‘The Piano Teacher’ (2001), for which she received rave reviews.

With support from IFTA and the French Embassy, Huppert’s talent will be honoured at the Galway Town Hall Theatre on Sunday, July 15 at 3pm.

As previously reported on IFTN, award-winning director Ventura Pons (Food of Love, 1000 Fools) will host a directors masterclass on July 11, followed by a masterclass on how to create great television drama, hosted by ‘Mad Men’ writer and producer Lisa Albert on July 12. Irish producer Ciarán Donnelly (Titanic: Blood & Steel) will accompany Albert.

July 14 will see former Warner Brothers senior vice president Bill Daly host a post-production workshop, where he’ll share the skills he learned from working on blockbusters such as ‘The Dark Knight’.

Other Fleadh highlights include the opening screening of ‘Grabbers’ on July 10, which will be attended by stars Ruth Bradley (Beauty and the Beast) and Richard Coyle (W.E.). Director Jon Wright and writer Kevin Lehane will also attend the screening at the Town Hall Theatre.

Other Irish films being screened include ‘Songs for Amy’, which will have its European premiere at the Fleadh on Wednesday July 11, with director Konrad Begg, producer Fiona Graham and cast member Sean Maguire confirmed to attend.

Director Seán Ó Cualáin will attend the screening of his documentary ‘Lón sa Spéir’, which contains significant Galway links. The documentary brought two Galway men to New York to the scene of the iconic ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’ photograph in which their fathers featured. Fionnula Flanagan narrates the Irish-language version. Ó Cualáin will attend the screening on Friday July 13.

Kieron J. Walsh will attend the screening of his much-anticipated film ‘Jump’, with cast member and ‘Shadow Dancer’ actor Martin McCann also confirmed to attend on July 13.

The Fleadh will also hold a number of additional industry events, such as the awards ceremony, where one talented applicant will be awarded the Pitching Award for their film idea, and the Galway Film Fair Marketplace, which is a networking event taking place July 13-14.

The Galway Film Fleadh takes place between July 10-15. For the full Fleadh programme please visit www.galwayfilmfleadh.com or click here. See IFTN’s Diary for all upcoming Fleadh events, including masterclass application deadlines.
