Redford critical of Cameron as Sundance London opens… Hollywood legend Robert Redford last night criticized British Prime Minister David Cameron for having a “narrow view” of the British film industry. The actor and director was responding to Cameron’s view that the British film industry should concentrate solely on producing commercially viable films. Redford’s comments came on the opening night of his UK version of his Sundance Film Festival, which began in London yesterday and runs until Sunday. The American actor was joined on the opening night of the festival by Irish Oscar-winner Glen Hansard, who performed at the event.
Warner Brothers and Joel Silver to part ways…Warner Brothers have reportedly ended their 25-year relationship with renowned Hollywood producer Joel Silver (The Matrix, Unknown), according to Deadline Hollywood. The website says that Silver Pictures will no longer have a production deal with the studio following a reported dispute over Warner Bros’ handling of ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’. Silver has been responsible for billions in ticket sales for Warner Bros over including four Lethal Weapon movies and The Matrix trilogy films.
BBC to use viewer-footage for documentaries… The BBC has announced that it is to take a new approach to documentary-making by using footage shot be its viewers. Such footage will play a central part in forthcoming programmes including ‘I Want To Change My Body’; ‘The War On Britain’s Roads’ and ‘Britain In A Day’. Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s commissioning editor of documentaries, says: “By asking people to film and share their own stories we are gaining a degree of intimacy and honesty that feels very different to what it's possible to capture with a crew.”
