‘Weekender’ and ‘Charlie Casanova’ for Edinburgh
06 May 2011 :
The 65th edition of the Edinburgh Film Festival will see the world premiere of Karl Golden’s ‘Weekender’ and a screening of Terry McMahon’s award winning feature, ‘Charlie Casanova’. The ‘Weekender’ screening is the second world premiere in a row for Karl Golden who saw his gritty film ‘Pelican Blood’ premiere at last year’s event. David Hare’s ‘Page Eight’ starring Michael Gambon is also set to screen at the festival which will take place at venues across Edinburgh from June 15th – 26th.

Karl Golden’s comedy drama, ‘Weekender’ tells the story of two friends, played by Jack O'Connell (This is England) and Henry Lloyd-Hughes (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), who get drawn into the hedonistic world of warehouse parties during the UK's acid house explosion in 1990. The director of photography involved is John Conroy (Green Zone).

Scripted by Chris Coghill (Eastenders), the film is produced by Benchmark Films/Foundation Films' Ian Brady (Re0inventing Eddie) and Stephen Salter (The Crew) and Alliance Films' Robert Walak (co-producer, Vampire Killers) and executive produced by Xavier Marchand (Dorian Gray, Birth), David Hayman (Wasted) and Mark Jaffray. Furthermore, renowned DJ and producer Terry Farley served as creative consultant on the film.

Dublin born Karl Golden’s previous feature, ‘Pelican Blood’ had its world premiere at last year’s Edinburgh Film Festival, the feature was also nominated for the festival’s Michael Powell Award for Best New Feature.

The other Irish feature that has been selected to show at the Edinburgh event is Terry McMahon’s complex drama, ‘Charlie Casanova’. The film details the spiraling events of an upper class sociopath who knocks down a working class girl in a hit-and-run and uses a deck of playing cards to determine his fate. The feature stars Emmett Scanlan (The Guards, Hollyoaks) who walked away with the Best Film Actor Award at the recent ECU European Independent Film Festival for his performance in the film.

Scanlan’s cast members include Leigh Arnold (The Clinic), Damien Hannaway (The Guards), Ruth McIntyre (Shackled), Tony Murphy, Valeria Bandino (The Doppleganger) and Johnny Elliott. It shot in Dublin in January 2010 with Eoin Macken (Christian Blake) as director of photography and Tony Kearns (Last Night) as editor.

Reacting to his film’s Edinburgh selection, ‘Charlie Casanova’ writer and director, Terry McMahon commented that: “Since the age of fifteen, when I began obsessively renting videos, (later DVDs) - sometimes up to five a day - the one detail on the poster that always guaranteed the film was going to be uncompromisingly and individualistically compelling was ‘Edinburgh Film Festival Official Selection.’ That same awkward fifteen year old never dreamed he’d have that detail on the poster of his own movie.”

Finally, David Hare's political thriller ‘Page Eight’ starring Dublin actor Michael Gambon (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) has also been invited to screen at the event. The drama also features Bill Nighy (The Boat that Rocked), Rachel Weisz (About a Boy) and Ralph Fiennes (The Constant Gardener).

Further screening titles are to be announced in the coming days. For more information about the festival which runs from the 15th to the 26th of June visit www.edfilmfest.org.uk/
