Principal photography on the project began in March, with both Ardmore Studios and Cahir Castle in Tipperary being utilised as filming locations.

The Hollywood feature film is a retelling of the 14thCentury tale, ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ and is financed by US based companies A24 and Bron Studios. American writer and director, David Lowery (‘The Old Man & the Gun’), is helming the project and will also produce alongside Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston through their Sailor Bear production shingle.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a famous tale from early English literature, following the story of the chivalrous and loyal Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table. Sir Gawain (Patel) accepts the challenge of beheading the Green Knight and must wait a year and a day to receive a blow in return. In the end, it transpires to be a test of his loyalty to the king.

In March 2019, it was announced that Oscar-nominee Dev Patel (‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘Lion’), would lead a star-studded cast including Irish actor and IFTA award nominee Barry Keoghan (‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’, ‘American Animals’), Oscar winner Alicia Vilkander (‘The Danish Girl’), Ralph Ineson (‘Game of Thrones’) and Erin Kellyman (‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’).

‘The Green Knight’ is the latest in a string of successful castings for Barry Keoghan, who was nominated for a BAFTA Rising Star Award in February. It was also announced earlier in 2019 that the Irish actor would be leading the new FX comic-book adaptation series, ‘Y: The Last Man’. As of yet, it is unclear what role Keoghan will play in the fantasy epic.

‘The Green Knight’ is still currently in production, with a release date expected at some point in 2020.
