‘Fir Bolg’
The opening episode of the six-part series begins at 9.30pm.

We spoke to the ‘Fir Bolg’ writer/producer Brian Reddin ahead of the new series airing tonight on TG4 he described it as, “Ireland’s first dramatic comedy musical with, the most ecliptic cast you’ll ever see.”

A comic drama about second chances, ‘Fir Bolg’ tells the hilarious if not troubled story of a traditional Irish group who have a history but little future.

This is ‘Spinal Tap’, trad-style as we follow the often pot-holed, back lanes of the band as they journey on the road of reunion, after reluctantly agreeing to get back together for a one-off gig following a funeral of the founding member.

As preparations for the gig get underway, the ‘Fir Bolg’ find themselves dragged into more gigs and more controversy, as skeletons begin to fall out of the closet. The show attempts to recapture a moment in time amid bitter breakups and sweet reconciliations. There is harmony but also discord and more than a few bum notes.

‘Fir Bolg’ features a superb cast that includes many Irish acting greats such as;  Seán McGinley, Don Wycherley, Aonghus McAnally, Peadar Cox, Máirtín Jaimsie and Caroline Morahan.

The series also features some of the leading figures in the world of Irish music, acting, comedy and showbiz. Among those in cameo roles are; Patrick Bergin, Liam Cunningham, Stephen Rea, Amy Huberman, Paddy Moloney, Ryan Tubridy, Brendan Grace and Conal Gallen and Daniel O’Donnell.

The series features 12 new’ Fir Bolg’ songs composed by Hothouse Flower Fiachna Ó Braonáin, who also acts as musical director.

An Irish Film & Television Academy screening of ‘Fir Bolg’ took place in the Sugar Club in August of this year. Brian said, “ the response from the screening was, unbelievable, I had been nervous but it couldn’t have gone any better, the response was just fantastic and I remember the atmosphere after was absolutely amazing, people were really adoring it.”

Brian is also delighted that TG4 selected the series to be aired to coincide with the celebration of their 20 years. “Having TG4 highlighting this drama and tying it in with the twenty year celebrations, definitely means a lot.”

Directed by Tom Sullivan, written by Brian Reddin who also produced for Dearg Films alongside John Brady.

The series was part-funded by the BAI Sound & Vision Funding Scheme and by the Section 481 tax-supports provided by the Irish Government.

‘Fir Bolg’ starts tonight at 9.30pm TG4 .
