Here, we scoured the IFTN archives to pull out some key moments in the career of the Dublin actor.

Hollywood Praised Colin Farrell Returns for home-grown ‘Intermission’.

In a whirlwind three years for Farrell, he made his television debut in Irish series ‘Ballykissangel’, landed his first major Hollywood film role in ‘Tigerland’ and then cemented his leading man status with films such as WW2 drama ‘Hart’s War’ (opposite Bruce Willis) and science fiction thriller ‘Minority Report’ (directed by Steven Spielberg). He then returned home to film John Crowley’s ‘Intermission’, which went on to be a critical and commercial success when it was released in Ireland in 2003.

Colin Farrell to Take Over Ledger Role.

After showing his acting mettle in acclaimed independent films such as Terence Malick’s ‘The New World’ and Martin McDonagh’s ‘In Bruges’ having already proved himself a box office draw – Farrell was one of the biggest actors in the world in 2008 – a point hammered home after the sad and untimely passing of Heath Ledger. Ledger had filmed most of Terry Gilliam’s surrealist fantasy drama ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’ before his unexpected death with Gilliam wanting three big-name actors to replace and pay tribute to the Oscar-winning actor. The other two actors selected were Jude Law and Johnny Depp.

Possibly one of the biggest moments in Colin Farrell’s career so far. After turning in a performance which earned him widespread acclaim as the hitman Ray in Martin McDonagh’s ‘In Bruges’, Farrell won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical in 2009. He was nominated alongside his co-star Brendan Gleeson while fellow Irish actor Gabriel Byrne also won a Golden Globe for his lead performance in US drama series ‘In Treatment’.

Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz to star in Irish-Greek Co-Production ‘The Lobster’.

Flashing forward to ‘The Lobster’. The English language debut of writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos (who was responsible for the films ‘Alps’ and the Oscar nominated ‘Dogtooth’) was highly anticipated and in February 2014, he announced his cast with Farrell in the lead role alongside Oscar winner Rachel Weisz and Oscar nominee John C. Reilly. Speaking about the casting, Lanthimos said: “I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to work with such great actors. Their contribution to our film will enrich and expand the world we are trying to create and explore”. Farrell didn’t disappoint; his performance was well received and he garnered BIFA and IFTA nominations.

Colin Farrell confirmed for ‘True Detective’.

The first season of ‘True Detective’ starred major Hollywood stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and received very positive reviews, eventually winning Best Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards. A lot of this success was down to the performances of the two stars who were both on top of their game in early 2014; McConnaughey in particular had just won an Oscar for ‘Dallas Buyers Club. After a widespread hunt to fill their shoes, Farrell was chosen as one of the leads in September 2014. Despite less than favourable reviews for the second series, Farrell’s performance was well received and earned him an IFTA nomination for Best Actor Drama.
