Irish films ‘Good Vibrations’, ‘The Girl with the Mechanical Maiden’ and ‘Citadel’ were among the big winners as the 24th Galway Film Fleadh closed last night with the announcement of its annual awards.

‘Good Vibrations’, the Colin Carberry and Glenn Patterson-penned biopic, which screened at the Fleadh on Saturday night, picked up the Best Irish Feature Award in the Audience Award category.

The film had garnered enough buzz to pack the Town Hall on Saturday, and was attended by directors Lisa Barros D’sa and Glenn Leyburn; producers David Holmes and Chris Martin; editor Nick Emerson, and Terri Hooley, the record shop-owner whom the film is centred around.

Set in Belfast during the height of the Troubles in the 70s, ‘Good Vibrations’ will be released in Irish and UK cinemas later this year, with Richard Dormer, who has just been cast in season three of ‘Game of Thrones’, playing the title role of Hooley.

Speaking ahead of its screening on Saturday night, producer David Holmes told IFTN he was excited to see the film in a "proper cinema", having previously premiered it at the Ulster Hall as part of the Belfast Film Festival. He also said he wasn’t nervous about the Fleadh screening as the Belfast audience was more than likely the "toughest audience to crack", as they are aware of the Terri Hooley story.

Mark O’Connor’s ‘Stalker’ received second place in the Audience Award category for Best Irish Feature.

Writer, director and cinematographer Andrew Legge picked up The Tiernan McBride Award for Best Short Drama for his film ‘The Girl with the Mechanical Maiden’. Network Ireland Television’s Derry O’Brien presented the award, which gives the short eligibility to enter the Short Film Competition for an Academy Award. ‘The Wire’ star Dominic West features alongside Serena Brabazon and Ingrid Craigie. Legge wrote and directed the short, with Ciara Whelan producing.

Colm Quinn’s ‘Joy’ received a Special Mention in the same category.

‘Citadel’ and ‘Earthbound’ received the joint award of Best First Irish Feature. ‘Citadel’ was directed by Ciarán Foy and produced by Katie Holly for Blinder Films and Brian Coffey for Sigma Films. It screened at the Town hall Theatre on Friday July 13 as part of the Fleadh. The horror stars James Cosmo (Game of Thrones), Aneurin Barnard (We’ll Take Manhattan) and Wunmi Mosaku (Vera).

Actress and former TV presenter Caroline Morahan (Off the Rails, A Kiss for Jed) attended the screening of ‘Citadel’ and told IFTN she "watched the majority of it from behind my arm" due its frightening subject matter. She added: "It’s a testament to their (Blinder) skill that I could barely watch the film, it was so horrifying, it was really just a psychological-thriller horror, it just pours into your skull, and I’m not very good at watching those kind of movies!"

‘Earthbound’, a sci-fi adventure directed by Alan Brennan in his directorial debut, also screened at the Fleadh on Friday July 13. Heidi Karin Madsen, Jacqueline Kerrin and Dominic Wright produced the feature, which is a Ripple World and Paper Dreams co-production. The alien-based drama stars Rafe Spall (Prometheus), Jenn Murray (The Fades) and David Morrissey (Blitz).

Other winners on the night include Art O’Briain’s ‘Natural Grace’, which picked up first prize in the Best Irish Feature Documentary, and ‘Lón sa Spéir’, directed by Seán Ó Cualáin, which took second prize in the same category.

Hannah Patterson won the Galway Film Fleadh Pitching Award with her idea for ‘Resistance’, and feature film ‘Pilgrim Hill’, which screened on Friday July 13, won director Gerard Barrett the Bingham Ray New Talent Award.

Speaking after the IFTA Summer Reception on Saturday evening, Galway Film Fleadh programmer Gar O’Brien said this year’s Fleadh was the biggest and best he has seen in his seven years working there: "I certainly feel like it’s been the biggest and best. I think a lot of that is because of the current crop of Irish cinema and talent that’s coming through, everything from ‘Grabbers’ from day one, right through, has just been a adored." He added: "I am fully expecting in two or three year’s time to be at the Fleadh again and to be introducing projects that were started from people meeting at events like this."

O'Brien said the one thing he wanted attendees to take away from the 2012 Fleadh was "passion for cinema, passion for what we do, what the industry does, and a passion to support, create, thrive and enjoy it."
