Representatives for Irish director Brian Kirk have confirmed that he is in talks to direct Marvel/Disney sequel ‘Thor 2’ which is due for release in 2013.
‘Thor 2’ would mark Kirk’s first foray into big budget feature filmmaking however the Armagh born director’s screen credits also include the 2006 feature 'Middletown' and episodes of the HBO hit series ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire’. The director has also helmed the IFTA nominated ‘Father & Son’ in 2010, the Irish filmed TV movie ‘My Boy Jack’ and ‘The Tudors’.
Brian Kirk is currently working on the BBC One Drama Series ‘Great Expectations’. Based on the Dickens’ novel, it will be broadcast this Christmas to celebrate the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth (2012).
The original ‘Thor’ was directed by another Irishman Kenneth Branagh and grossed $437 million worldwide. The Marvel sequel has a US release date set for July 26, 2013. Irish and UK release dates are TBC.
