The 5 part series was shot on location in Drogheda earlier this year. Based on the hugely successful play of the same name, ‘Love Is The Drug’ was co-written by Darren Thornton (who also directs), Martin Maguire and Barbara Bergin and is produced by Saffron Productions for RTÉ.
Described as “a love story with an Irish twist,” the series is hoping to attract a teenage/twenty something audience. ‘Love is The Drug’ features a talented cast of young actors that includes Allen Leech (Man About Dog, Cowboys & Angels), Garrett Lombard (Alexander), Chris Newman (Song for a Raggy Boy, The Clinic) and Ruth Negga (Capital Letters, Breakfast On Pluto).
28 year old director and co-writer Darren Thornton says, “We wanted to write something we would be into watching ourselves - that was the starting point for us… We wanted to create a show that wasn’t simply plot-driven but had really strong characters that you’d actually like to hang out with. Honesty was the key word that we always went back to – we always asked ourselves if it rang true and if people would identify with it.”
RTÉ’s Commissioning Editor for Drama, Mary Callery, says, “I love these characters! They laugh, they cry, they try really hard and sometimes they get it wrong! The team have created a world filled with genuinely credible and likeable characters who I am sure the audience will recognise and warm to. Set as it is in Drogheda, the series offers a unique look at life in contemporary Ireland outside the big cities.”
