The new media regulator Coimisiún na Meán (Media Commission) has been formally established in Ireland.
The Commission will inherit the work previously done by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), while regulating broadcasters and online media, as well as supporting media development in Ireland.
The organisation was established under the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act in 2022, with Coimisiún na Meán being tasked with the responsibility of introducing a new regulatory framework for online safety in Ireland.
Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin T.D., welcomed the formal establishment of Coimisiún na Meán.
“I welcome the formal establishment of Coimisiún na Meán today. I have met with the incoming Executive Chairperson and Commissioners and know that they will form a dedicated and strong team,” said Minister Martin. “I look forward to working with them as we chart a new path for the regulation and development of the media sector in Ireland.”
Coimisiún na Meán will be led by four Commissioners, who have been appointed by Minister Martin: Jeremy Godfrey as Executive Chairperson; Niamh Hodnett as Online Safety Commissioner; Rónán Ó Domhnaill as Media Development Commissioner; and Celine Craig as Broadcasting Commissioner.
The Minister also welcomed the commitment by Coimisiún to prepare and share its first work programme, which will be delivered in the coming weeks.
