Filming underway on Kneecap, the new Irish Language feature film about Belfast-based rap trio

Kneecap, the Belfast-based rap trio, were filming in Dundalk last week for their upcoming Irish language dark comedy film.

The group promoted three events over social media in which fans could attend live performances of their music that will be used in the film. The first of the three 5-hour gigs took place on March 1st in Dundalk, and the following two events will take place in Belfast on March 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

“We are filming a massive gig scene, and who better to be in the crowd than the fans that got us here.” Kneecap stated. “Please note, this is not a regular gig. You will get to see Kneecap perform live, but with the nature of a film set, there will be a lot of time where Kneecap is not performing. Keeping that in mind, it will still be a fun and unique experience.”

Wildcard Distribution has received a funding commitment of €350,000 from BAI’s Sound and Vision scheme for the trio’s self-titled bi-lingual drama, Kneecap, which will broadcast on TG4.

The film is written and directed by Rich Peppiatt (One Rogue Reporter), one of the recipients of the 2021 Mother Tongues Awards, a development initiative for projects at treatment or script stage, in which the story dialogue is in a language other than English. Kneecap was written in development with Trevor Birney (Fine Points Films), who has produced award-winning documentaries such as Bobby Sands: 66 Days and HBO’s Emmy-winning Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence In The House of God.

“It’s not our own personal stories – our characters have their own fictional stories – but it’s the KNEECAP timeline, which is all true," Kneecap's Móglaí Bap said, speaking to Hot Press last year.
