04 Mar 2021 : Nathan Griffin
Wolfwalkers
Following on from its nomination at the Golden Globes, Wolfwalkers has earned 10 nominations, including Best Animated Feature – Independent, at this year’s Annie Awards.

The nominations were announced by ASIFA-Hollywood for the 48th Annual Annie Awards, which recognize the year’s best in the field of animation.

Two feature animations lead the way this year with the competition ramping up between Disney/Pixar’s Soul and Apple+/Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers, which each earned 10 Annie Award nominations, respectively.

The Apple Original film is directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, and written by Will Collins (Song of the Sea). Paul Young, Nora Twomey, Moore, and Stéphan Roelants serve as producers. Wolfwalkers follows Moore’s two prior Oscar-nominated animated features, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, as well as Cartoon Saloon’s Oscar-nominated The Breadwinner.

The film is an AFI Fest and Critics’ Choice Super Award winner, and has been named Best Animated Film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, Dublin Critics Circle, Chicago Film Critics Association, and San Diego Film Critics Society.

Wolfwalkers 10 Annie nominations include Best Animated Feature – Independent; Best FX – Feature; Best Character Animation – Feature; Best Character Design – Feature; Best Direction – Feature; Best Music – Feature; Best Production Design – Feature; Best Storyboarding – Feature; Best Voice Acting – Feature; and Best Writing – Feature.

Wolfwalkers is set in a time of superstition and magic as a young apprentice hunter, Robyn Goodfellowe, journeys to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

GKIDS serves as the theatrical distribution partner in North America where the film will be returning to theatres next month, and is now streaming on Apple TV+. Wolfwalkers is expected to re-release in Irish cinemas when they reopen later in the year.

The Annie Awards will be announced on Friday, April 16.
