Irish actress Cathy Belton spoke recently about the cast and crew’s reaction to the success of the Dublin-based series since it began to air on BBC One this month.
In particular Belton is delighted with the willingness of the TV3 taking the risk on a new drama being rewarded with such positive reception at home and abroad.
Speaking to RTÉ 10 at the launch of the 2016 Dublin Theatre festival she says, “I think we all just feel very excited and relieved and delighted that it's doing so well… "[It got] great reviews and 1.1 million viewers in the first episode, and it continues to grow, which is huge."
Dan McGolpin, Controller of BBC Daytime, stated earlier this year that, “Daytime viewers are in for a treat with Red Rock. It's a compelling new police drama set in Ireland, it has plenty of twists and turns.”
Stephen Driscoll of EVP Media likewise commented: “Red Rock delivers an engaging cast of characters and storylines that will grip audiences with this original mix of family drama and police procedural.”
Amazon Prime also reinforced this positive response to the show late last year, when they struck a deal to stream 80 episodes of the series for an estimated $1M.
The show has been highly commended by viewers and critics alike for its strong female characters, its striking production value and the high-quality storylines produced for its cast.
Belton is eagerly looking forward to the development of her character Patricia Hennessy, whose upcoming storyline is beautifully written. She further commends the writing team, who she says “…write powerful women with loads of dimension and loads of flaws and vices and great attributes as well.”
