Irish At Cannes: Irish documentaries going to market and selling in 2016
13 May 2016 : Seán Brosnan
Irish documentaries have a strong presence at Cannes
Irish documentaries have so far this year had a very significant presence at festivals such as Hot Docs, Sundance and the upcoming Sheffield Doc/Fest with the renowned Cannes proving no different.

In all, there are 12 Irish documentary films currently selling or going to market on the bustling Marche Du Film. These include some that have already made an impact (‘The Queen of Ireland’, ‘Older Than Ireland’, the IFTA-winning ‘Mom and Me’, the Sundance winning ‘The Land of the Enlightened’) and some that are just starting their journey (‘Hostage to the Devil’, ‘Mattress Men’, ‘Crash and Burn’, It’s Not Yet Dark’).

Films going to market this year are:

  • Lost in France (Still Films) – directed by Niall McCann
  • Older Than Ireland (Snackbox Films) – directed by Alex Fegan
  • Mattress Men (El Zorrero Films) – directed by Colm Quinn
  • The Farthest (Crossing The Line Productions) – directed by Emer Reynolds
  • The Queen of Ireland (Blinder Films) – directed by Conor Horgan
  • Atlantic (Scannán Inbhear) – directed by Risteard Ó Domhnaill
  • Crash and Burn (Dot Television) – directed by Seán Ó Cualáin
  • It’s Not Yet Dark (Kennedy Films/Newgrange Pictures) – directed by Frankie Fenton

One film that is sure to garner international attention is the Kennedy Films/Newgrange Pictures documentary ‘It’s Not Yet Dark’, which follows acclaimed Irish filmmaker Simon Fitzmaurice as he directs his debut feature ‘My Name is Emily’ (nominated for eight IFTA Awards this year and also at the market at Cannes) through the use of his eyes and eye gaze technology. The film will also be unveiled at the Sheffield Doc/Fest next month.

Speaking to IFTN from Cannes, producers Kathryn Kennedy and Lesley McKimm said: “We are just in the process of completing the film now and it should be ready in the coming month. We’re really delighted with how it’s turning out and our key aim now in Cannes and also at the upcoming Sheffield documentary market is to partner with a Sales Agent on it.”

A film currently in cinemas in Ireland and also at the market at Cannes is Risteard Ó Domhnaill’s ‘Atlantic’. The film takes on the powerful interests carving up Ireland's ocean resources and is narrated by Irish actor Brendan Gleeson.

Speaking to IFTN about the documentary, Ó Domhnaill said: “After four years of making this documentary, it is just a massive release to have it out there. And I am delighted to have it at the market at Cannes as it is an international story that is timely and relevant. Maybe now more than ever. Something needs to be done and something needs to be done quickly.”

Another documentary that is sure to turn the heads of Cannes buyers is Seán Ó Cualáin’s ‘Crash and Burn’ which follows the story of former Irish racing driver Tommy Byrne, one of the best racing drivers you have never heard of. Producer David Burke of Dot Television thinks the film should appeal to international buyers.

Speaking to IFTN about the film, Burke said: “I think we have a great story in ‘Crash and Burn’. The recent of success of racing films like ‘Senna’ and ‘Road’ prove there is a big market there for films like this. But we also have a ‘Searching for Sugarman’ slant to our story. Eddie Jordan once said Tommy Byrne was the best racing driver of all time, ever better than Senna, yet very few people know who he is so I am very excited to see how it does internationally.”

Films selling at Cannes this year include Ken Wardrop’s documentary ‘Mom and Me’ (which recently won the IFTA for Best Feature Documentary), Causeway Pictures ‘Hostage to the Devil’ which explores the true story of writer, priest, scholar and exorcist Fr Malachi Martin, Fastnet Films ‘The Land of the Enlightened’ (which won an award at Sundance for cinematography and has so far screened at Hot Docs and Rotterdam) and ‘Bobby Sands: 66 Days, directed by Brendan J. Byrne, which drew plaudits at Hot Docs in Toronto last month.
