Tile Films complete post on ambitious TG4 period drama series ‘Éiri Amach Amú/Wrecking the Rising’
15 Apr 2016 : Seán Brosnan
Tile Films has just completed post-production on ‘Éiri Amach Amú/Wrecking the Rising’ for TG4.

This is TG4's flagship project to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. It will be broadcast at 9.30pm on Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th and Monday 25th April 2016 to mark the actual 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising – in 1916, Easter Monday fell on 24th April.

The series follows three modern-day Irishmen, Ernest (Owen McDonnell – ‘An Klondike’), Tom (Sean T. Ó Meallaigh – ‘The Callback Queen’/‘An Klondike) and Seán (Peter Coonan – ‘Love/Hate’), who endure listless and unexciting lives living in Dublin. Their only enjoyment comes from staging re-enactments of the Easter Rising. After being mysteriously transported back in time to 1916 they cause a huge blunder that has the potential to wreck the Easter Rising before it has even begun. Somehow they must keep history on course – and figure out a way to return to the future.

The series was filmed at twenty locations throughout Dublin city. But its real showpiece is the life-size GPO constructed in an empty hanger in Galway airport, where the bulk of the series was filmed in October and November 2015.

Producer Stephen Rooke said: “This is certainly the most ambitious drama project Tile Films has ever undertaken. It is a fascinating time-travel series with a twist, in that it involves real historical events and people. Pádraig Pearse, James Connolly, Michael Collins and others are vividly and arrestingly brought to life, and the viewer will share Tom, Seán and Ernest’s wide-eyed amazement as they meet these iconic historical figures in the flesh. What would it be like to live, fight and die alongside them?”

But how did they manage to film a drama of this scale in the GPO? “We didn’t”, says Stephen. “We constructed our own full-size GPO in a hanger in Galway Airport. To build such a huge set for both interior and exterior filming was certainly a challenge for the production team. It is a great credit to production designer Padraig O’Neill and his team that we pulled it off within the constraints of an incredibly tight budget.”

Director Ruán Magan said of the series: “Wrecking the Rising’ is one of those extraordinary projects that comes along once in a lifetime. James Phelan's script combines comedy, fantasy, irreverence, truth, great drama and emotion. Working with actors Peter Coonan, Owen McDonnell, Seán T. Ó Meallaigh and all the cast and crew in realizing this project and turning our history on its head was an extraordinary privilege.”

Outer Limits Post Production have just completed visual post production on this exciting series for Tile Films, with a core team of Gary Curran (grading), Andy Clarke (visual effects), Cillian Duffy (online editor) and Ciara Walsh (post production supervisor). Avatar Audio Post Production handling audio post production, under the careful supervision of Killian Fitzgerald. Leading Irish composer Ray Harman (‘Love/Hate’) wrote the quirky music score for the series.

Other crew include acclaimed editor Anna Maria O’Flanagan (‘A Date for Mad Mary’), production designer Padraig O’Neill (Recent IFTA nominee for ‘An Klondike’), DOP Colm Whelan (winner of the 2015 IFTA for best cinematography on Tile Films’ ‘A Terrible Beauty’), Sound Recordist Stephen McDowell and Costume Designer Tríona Lillis (also a recent IFTA nominee for ‘An Klondike’).

A stellar supporting cast includes Jeanne O’Connor (Molly Foley), Eva-Jane Gaffney (Grace Morgan), Olga Wehrly (Dee Purcell), Lochlann Ó Mearáin (Michael Collins), Enda Oates (James Connolly), Jack Walsh (Tom Clarke), Timmy Creed (Éamon De Valera), J.D. Kelleher (The O’Rahilly) and Ian Toner (John Purcell).

‘Éirí Amach Amú/Wrecking the Rising’ is funded by TG4, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound & Vision III Funding Scheme, and Section 481, Ireland’s Film Tax Corporation Credit.
