DKIT unveil new 4K TV Studio
26 Jan 2016 : Seán Brosnan
The state of the art equipment at DKIT
Long recognized both nationally and internationally for its’ state of the art facilities and lecturers working in the top-tier of the industry, the BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production at DKIT is one of the most exciting and practical courses in the country.

Add continued investment in 4K technology to that list also as DKIT are currently implementing a 4K workflow into their existing HD TV Studio.

They have installed three new Blackmagic Ultra HD studio cameras, 4K Blackmagic ATEM switcher, HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder, Mackie DL Audio Mixer, new 4K monitors and much more.

DKIT are currently the only college in Ireland to have a 4K TV Studio. The new equipment will work alongside their HD gear giving them the flexibility to switch from HD to 4K, depending on the requirements of the production and client. 4K is four times the resolution of HD and is great for Post Production techniques such as green screen and re-framing.

The new 4K Vision Mixer allows complex switching and intricate effects. It can be controlled from the panel in the Control Room or by a laptop remotely. If a wheelchair bound student couldn't access the Control Room, he/she could vision mix with a laptop on the Studio Floor.

DKIT are also capable of storing and managing 4K media effectively as they have the latest Avid Media Server that is connected to 22 computers in their Editing Lab and five standalone Edit Suites. They have a Colour Grading suite that can also grade 4K footage. Everything is stored in one location and backed up twice. The media server is so powerful that all editing computers can be working on the same media at the same time with no issues whatsoever.

The facilities at DKIT also includes:

  • HD TV Studio with five camera setup
  • Screening Room with 200 inch screen and 7.1 surround sound
  • 35mm Photography Lab and Darkroom
  • Editing Lab with 22 Macs
  • Audio Labs
  • Five Edit Suites and Colour Grading Suite
  • ADR/Sound Booths
  • Portable Pro Tools Rig
  • Avid Media Server

Recognizing that so much television and film work depends on green-screen work these days, DKIT also houses two green screen studios for chroma keying and visual effects. These cover lighting for green screen, motion tracking, keying and compositing in After Effects.

In the BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production at DKIT, students will learn; Multi-camera television production, Outside Broadcasts, Digital Cinematography, Short films, Documentary/Factual, Interactive filmmaking, Music Videos, Post Production, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Colour Grading, DIT and Data Wrangling and 4K Workflows.

Guest Lecturers on the course include Alan Fitzpatrick (Managing Director, Filmbase), Gerry Stembridge (Author/ Director/ Broadcaster), Stephen Murphy (Steadicam Operator), Terry McMahon (Director), Fergal O'Hanlon (Cinematographer) Marian Quinn (Director and Actress).

The CAO deadline is February 1st – for more information on DKIT’s BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production, click here.

DKIT has sent us in a video detailing the Outside Broadcasts component of their course where students devise and execute a TV show in the Mac Anna Theater. They had to construct the Control Room from scratch and implement a mufti-camera setup. With so much television happening outside the studio, it's important for students to understand OB technology and techniques.

The behind the scenes video of the recently completed OB can be seen below:
