With the highly anticipated period drama ‘Brooklyn’ released to cinemas on November 6th, the Irish Film & Television Academy will host a special preview screening on October 16th, followed by a Q&A with director John Crowley.
‘Brooklyn’ has been receiving plaudits and a lot of awards buzz since its’ premiere at Sundance earlier this year, particularly for Saoirse Ronan’s performance and John Crowley’s direction.
The film was acquired by Fox Searchlight for $9m, the second biggest deal of the festival in 2015. The film has also received highly positive reviews from US publications such as Variety, The Los Angeles Times, The Hollywood Reporter and the New York Post.
‘Brooklyn’ is an Irish/British co-production from Wildgaze Films, Finola Dwyer Productions, Parallel Films and Item 7. It was co-financed by the Irish Film Board and filmed on location in Wexford, Dublin and Wicklow, as well as Montreal and New York.
Directed by IFTA and BAFTA winning director John Crowley (‘Intermission’, ‘Boy A’) and adapted by Nick Hornby from Colm Tóibin’s novel of the same name, ‘Brooklyn’ stars Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan as a young Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York whose blossoming relationship with an Italian plumber Tony (Emory Cohen),is threatened when tragedy calls her home. She returns to Ireland where her attraction for a charming local man called Jim (Domhnall Gleeson), grows.
The preview screening will conclude with a Q&A with director John Crowley. Crowley’s breakthrough in film was 2003’s ‘Intermission’, starring Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy, which won four IFTA awards including Best Film and Best Director for Crowley.
Crowley gained further acclaim and accolades with ‘Boy A’, about a young ex-convict released from prison following a murder he committed as a child. The film starred Andrew Garfield and won Crowley the BAFTA Award for Best Director. Other projects of Crowley’s include ‘Closed Circuit’ starring Eric Bana, ‘Is Anybody There’ starring Michael Caine and two episodes of acclaimed HBO series ‘True Detective’, starring Colin Farrell.
Lionsgate UK will release ‘Brooklyn’ in cinemas in Ireland and the UK on 6 November with Fox Searchlight releasing the film in the US on the same day.
