Peter McGann as Luke in the award-winning short film ‘Cavalier’, now available online
‘Aonrú’ selected to screen in competition at the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival, ‘The Nymph’ has been released by Oracle Pictures, Lochlainn McKenna’s ‘Pockets’ finishes post-production and will hit the festival circuit and the award-winning short film ‘Cavalier’ is now available online.

‘Aonrú’ selected to screen in competition at Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival

‘Aonrú’ has been officially selected for competition at the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival 2015. Co-funded by Cork County Council and Bord Iascaigh Mhara this is the first documentary to study the extinction of fishing on Cape Clear Island, West Cork.

A richly textured documentary essay on history, loss and change; ‘Aonrú’ offers a unique exploration of Cape Clear Island, West Cork and its indigenous fishing industry. Director Dominic de Vere (‘Watermark’) fuses archive footage and observational camera techniques to portray a serene community facing uncertainty and celebrates one of mankind’s oldest endeavours while questioning its place in modern day rural Ireland.

Producer Jason Gaffney describes the ambition behind ‘Aonrú’: ‘The aim of the film was to capture the lifestyle of people living on Cape Clear Island, their fears about the future and their perspective on how and why the fishing industry fell into such rapid decline. We also wanted to shoot the island in a way that would bring it to a wider audience. It’s a stunning part of the world and one that few people know about.’

As opposed to conventional documentaries ‘Aonrú’ presents a unique portrait of the island from the air, the ground, the sea and beneath the water – something that has not been done on the island before.

Jason explains: ‘We wanted to provide a window to their world so that the audience can understand and ‘feel’ their everyday routine whilst also being drawn into the beauty and elegance of life on the island. Our film has captured the island in a wonderful way and we believe ‘Aonrú’ now stands as the voice of all Cape Clear islanders in modern day Ireland – a cinematic tale of their lives.’

Danny Crowley (‘Game of Thrones’) provided sound while Annie Atkins (‘Grand Budapest Hotel’) is heading graphic design ahead of ‘Aonrú’s’ worldwide festival launch May 2015. A Dublin Premiere will be announced soon while the film will also screen on Cape Clear Island Sunday 3 May 2015 at 8pm.

Damian Byrne’s ‘The Nymph’ released by Oracle Pictures

Oracle Pictures have just released ‘The Nymph’, written and directed by Damian Byrne, and shot in Blarney Castle Fairy Gardens and Dublin’s Hellfire Club.

With fantastical otherworldly characters, theme and setting, the film depicts The Hunter (Martin Galligan ) barbarous in his forest domain, the ultimate predator, until a beguiling creature appears, The Nymph (Anna Ilaya Ozolina ) and a bewitching choreographed seduction begins.

Describing the film as “a nocturnal dream about the equilibrium of nature”, the story was inspired when Damian heard Debussy’s Clair de Lune for the first time.

He said: ‘I had never heard a more beautiful, moving piece of music. It was like being in a dream and I listened to it over and over again. Three maybe four dozen times! I began writing about how each note made me feel and storyboarded what I was visualizing.’

‘The Nymph’ was initially written as an animated piece. However after seeing Anna perform ballet in Cork, Damian was further inspired to move the project in a new direction.

The film was financed partially through a Fundit campaign and through self-funding. Also an artist and graphic designer, Damian has just completed work on season two of the Showtime Television series ‘Penny Dreadful’ which is currently nominated for five BAFTA Awards.

‘The Nymph’ is his directorial debut and is at present being submitted to film festivals at home and abroad. It has already picked up the Best Film award from O.I.C. Media screenings at the Lighthouse Cinema. His next project is also a short film. Currently in post-production, ‘The Raven’, an interpretation of the Edgar Allan Poe classic poem stars Michael Bates and Aine de Suin, and is co-produced by Oracle Pictures and Reckoner Productions.

‘Pockets’ set for Festival run

The short film ‘Pockets’ has just finished post-production and will now be hitting the festival circuit.

‘Pockets’ is a subtle, darkly comic drama centred on the chance encounter of two despairing strangers, Martina and Tom, on a bench by an idyllic rural lakeside.

The film is the directorial debut of known actor Lochlainn McKenna who was also the writer of the film. The film was produced by McKenna’s company Speed of Sight Productions and co-produced by TW Films and StormLight. Brian Deane (‘Volkswagen Joe’, ‘Cead Grá’) was the producer for TW Films and Donogh MacCarthy-Morrogh (‘Barzakh’, ‘The Wrong Turn’) was the producer for StormLight. ‘Pockets’ stars television stalwart Mary McEvoy (‘Glenroe’) and Matthew O’Brien (‘The Lobster’, ‘Ctrl’). The Director of Photography was Russell Gleeson (‘Moone Boy’, ‘The Stag’). The score was originally composed by London based Christos Andreou. Other members of crew include: Ronan Cassidy and Steve Hall in the sound department and Crónán Creagh as 1st AD. The grading on the film was completed by Eugene McCrystal.

‘Pockets’ was funded via Fundit and shot on location in Blarney. Co. Cork. It will make its’ festival debut in May at The Fastnet Short Film Festival in Schull.

Writer/Director Lochlainn McKenna said: ‘The film was very much a passion project based on the works of Martin McDonagh. I love the dark and comedic elements of his work - especially In Bruges - which I consider to be a cult classic. I wanted to make a film like that but to touch on something a bit more interesting. Depression effects everyone, from erratic 20 year olds to 50-something year old lonely women. What happens when those mutual forces collide? We shot for two days in Blarney in September and I’m just extremely excited to let the film hit the festival circuit to see what people think. The frightfully generous funders deserve to see what they’ve created too!’

A trailer for the film can be seen here.
