Oscar-nominated ‘Song of the Sea’ wins Satellite Award

Award gives 'Song of the Sea' momentum going into Oscar ceremony on February 22nd
Oscar-nominated animated film ‘Song of the Sea’ has won the award for Best Animation or Mixed Media Film at the 19th Satellite Awards which were held in Century City, California on February 15th.

The film – directed by Tomm Moore and produced by Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon – is also nominated for an Oscar on Feb 22nd and beat out fellow nominees ‘Big Hero 6’, ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ and ‘The Boxtrolls’ to the Satellite Award.

The Satellite Awards are held every year by the International Press Academy and the awards ceremony honours the year’s outstanding performers, films, and television shows.

‘Song of the Sea’ – which was made with development and production support from the Irish Film Board (IFB) and features the voice talents of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan and Lisa Hannigan – has so far been nominated for an Oscar, seven Annie Awards and a Cesar Award for Best Animated Film.

Other big winners at the Satellite Awards include ‘Birdman’ which won Best Picture, its’ star Michael Keaton who won Best Actor and Julianne Moore who won Best Actress for her performance in ‘Still Alice’. A full list of winners can be seen here.

The Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 22nd. Other than the nomination for ‘Song of the Sea’, Northern Irish short ‘Boogaloo and Graham’ is also nominated for Best Live Action Short Film while the John Carney directed ‘Begin Again’ has received a nomination in the category of Best Original Song.

‘Song of the Sea’ will be released to Irish cinemas on July 10th, 2015 – with Studio Canal distributing.
