Irish Shorts at the GAZE LGBT Dublin Film Festival
29 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Following the announcement of a ‘Best of Irish’ Double Bill to feature the Dublin premiere of ‘African Pride’ and an exclusive sneak peek at footage from ‘The Queen of Ireland’, GAZE continues to support Irish film and proudly presents another programme of LGBT shorts this year. The six short films to be screened at the 2014 festival are ‘Coming Out Of the West’, directed by Cian Tracey, ‘Me First’ by Leanne Byrne, ‘I Am’ by Anna Rodgers, ‘Who Am I To Feel So Free’ by Dylan Hennessey, ‘Becoming Kiki’ by John Corcoran, and ‘The Usual’ by Ruth McNally.

This year’s selection begins with ‘Coming Out Of The West’, a short film about two openly gay Irish men living very different lives, Gary, who lives in Kilmeena in the West of Ireland and Keith, who moved from the West to the city centre of London. The film was directed and edited by Cian Tracey with camera by Amy Driver and sound by Julian Callan.

‘Me First’ is a story about an unhappily married woman who finds comfort in the arms of her daughter’s college friend. The film is directed by Leanne Byrne and stars Ray Reilly, Seaná Woods, Siobhan Bolton and Niamh Walsh.

‘I Am’, is directed by Anna Rodgers who recently won the IFTA for Best Director – Television, for her documentary ‘Somebody to Love’. Regarding ‘I Am’, Rodgers told IFTN, “our short film explores the personal stories with a group of individuals about their gender, and sense of self. It's made for the Transgender Equality Network of Ireland (TENI) and has literally just been completed so we're excited to share it with everyone at GAZE.”

Set in Dublin and London, ‘Who Am I To Feel So Free’ is a short documentary that explores themes of masculinity and diversity. In ‘Becoming Kiki’, a young drag artist talks about his life. The programme concludes with ‘The Usual’, a delightful short film about three Irish farmers having a drink in their local pub, when an unusual stranger walks in.

The GAZE Irish Shorts Programme will screen at 5.30pm on Monday 4th August. Book tickets here and find out more about the festival on gaze.ie.
