‘All is By My Side’ to Open Italy’s Biografilm Festival; ‘Frank’ to Close
30 May 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Italy’s Biografilm Festival is a unique event that marks the cinematic celebration of human lives. It brings together an international selection of biopics, documentaries and short films. The festival is based in Bologna and will celebrate its tenth edition this year.

This year’s festival will open with the Jimi Hendrix biopic ‘All is By My Side’, starring Andre 3000 and directed by John Ridley (‘12 Years a Slave’). The feature film is an Irish/American/British co-production, and was co-produced by Dublin-based Subotica Entertainment and producer Tristan Orpen Lynch. The film was also produced by Danny Bramson, who is heading the jury for this year’s Biografilm Festival.

‘All is By My Side’ has had a successful festival run already having premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, screened at SXSW in Texas, and recently opened the Seattle International Film Festival. The film will receive its highly anticipated Irish release on 8th August 2014.

The theme of this year’s Biografilm is ‘What’s Culture?’. Wim Wenders’ 3D documentary ‘Cathedrals of Culture’, Michel Gondry’s ‘Is the Man Who is Tall Happy? An Animated Conversation with Noam Chomsky’, Rogert Ebert doc ‘Life Itself’ (see the trailer here) and Frederick Wiseman’s ‘National Gallery’ will all be screened.

The Biografilm Festival will also see the presentation of lifetime achievement awards to documentary filmmakers Donn Alan Pennebaker, Michel Gondry, Nicholas Philibert, and performance artist Ulay as well as to producer Bramson. Pennebaker and his wife wife/co-director Chris Hegedus will also be honoured with a mini-retro made up of documentaries ‘Don’t Look Back’, ‘Jimi Plays Monterey’ and ‘The War Room’. This year’s festival also sees the launch of its first industry side, Bio to B, which will feature documentary project presentations and pitches to Italian and international producers.

Interestingly, it is another Irish-produced film that will be closing the film – Lenny Abrahamson’s black comedy ‘Frank’. The film stars Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson as members of an eccentric, electric pop band. The film has secured several international distribution deals and has received wide critical acclaim.

The Element Pictures/Runaway Fridge production will screen in the festival’s new Biografilm Europa selection, which is dedicated to European biopics. Abrahamson will also be paid homage at the festival in a mini-retro which includes his IFTA award-winning films ‘Adam & Paul’ and ‘What Richard Did’.

Both ‘All is By My Side’ and ‘Frank’ will be released in Italy through Biografilm’s film distribution spin-off I Wonder Pictures, which was previously set up to distribute Oscar-winning doc ‘Searching for Sugarman’ in Italy.

The 10th Biografilm fest will run June 6-16.
