The Dublin Documentary Film Festival, ‘Stranger Than Fiction’, will kick off tomorrow Sept 26th at the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar.
The festival, now in its tenth year, will run from the 26th to Sunday the 29th of September, and over the four days will showcase a range of international and home-grown documentaries in both short and feature-length format.
Opening the festival will be the Irish premiere of director Jeanie Finlay’s ‘The Great Hip Hop Hoax’, detailing the transformation of two failing Scottish hip-hop hopefuls into Californian duo Silibil ‘n’ Brains, as they dupe American music executives in order to become the next big thing overseas.
Also screening for the first time in Ireland will be ‘Smash and Grab’, featuring unprecedented insider access to the famed Pink Panther jewel thieves as well as stylistic animations of their famous heists in order to protect the identity of those involved. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Havana Marking.
The festival will also feature various events run in conjunction with the Irish Film Board, including screenings of ‘Reality Bites’, the short documentary fund run by the IFB, as well as four special panels intended to grant insight on various aspects of documentary filmmaking. These panels will run throughout the weekend and feature some of the most respected names in documentary filmmaking today, such as Nicky Gogan (Still Films), Emer Reynolds (Here Was Cuba) and Richie O’Donnell (The Pipe), among many others.
