Shorts Round-Up: 'Two Gallants', 'Nymph' and 'The Note', Starring Aiden Gillen
11 Sep 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
Cast and crew of 'Two Gallants' celebrate a successful shoot.
IFTN takes a look at three Irish short films - a modern day Joycean short, a fantasy project in development, and Failsafe Films' 'The Note' starring Aiden Gillen.

‘Two Gallants’ Wraps Filming in Dublin

‘Two Gallants’, a modern day short film inspired by the classic James Joyce ‘Dubliners’ story, has wrapped filming in Artane, Swords and Dublin city centre after a three day shoot.

Written by Carl Finnegan and Darren McGrath, the contemporary adaptation is intended to reflect the stress of the recession and the loss of the Celtic Tiger and will now be submitted for film festival consideration.

Among the cast were actors Carl Finnegan, John Carey, Alicja Ayres, George Bracebridge, Mary T. McCormack, Niamh Hogan, Aaron Jenner and Amanda Coakley.

Mr Finnegan also directed & produced, with other crew members including associate producer Donal Thurlow; DoP Stuart Duff; sound recordist Simon Murphy; make-up artist Niamh O’Malley; head of lighting Mark Birney; production assistant Ciaran Doran; and assistant director Patrick Rooks.

‘The Nymph’ to Shoot at Blarney Castle

‘The Nymph’, a new short film project by Irish animator Damian Byrne & Oracle Pictures, is set to film on location at Blarney Castle and will incorporate dancers from the Cork Ballet School performing to Debussy’s ‘Clair De Lune’.

Mr Byrne enjoyed recent success with his animated film ‘'Cuchlainn’s Lament' which has screened at over 30 international film festivals, and works in the art department on ‘Ripper Street’, which has wrapped filming on season two.

Inspired in tone by Disney’s ‘Fantasia’, the plot follows a hunter who tracks a white wolf into an enchanted forest where he encounters the ‘nymph’, a mythical creature who transfixes him like a siren.

‘The Note’, Starring Aiden Gillen, Continues Festival Success

Director Ciaran Creagh’s ‘The Note’, starring Aiden Gillen, is continuing its successful festival run after the Galway Film Fleadh with selections for upcoming film festivals in Warsaw, London, Rhode Island and San Francisco.

It has also been nominated for six awards at the Underground Cinema Awards, set to take place in Dun Laoghaire on 15th September, in the categories of Best newcomer; Best score; Best screenplay; Best director; Best Independent film; and Best Actor for Aidan Gillen.

’The Note’ is about a middle-aged alcoholic played by Gillen, who has lost his wife and child through his addiction, and carries around a note as a constant reminder of the sexual abuse he suffered as a child at the hands of a Christian Brother.

A Fail Safe Films production, ‘The Note’ was produced by Simon Doyle and other cast & crew include actress Ruth McCabe (‘The Snapper’); Director of Photography Owen McPolin (‘Mr. Selfridge’); editor Dermot Diskin (‘Love/Hate’); and composer Denis Clohessy (‘His & Hers’).
