Daily Bite: ‘World War Z’, Nicolas Winding Refn, and ‘Jobs’ trailer

See what else is happening in film & TV industries around the world.

Paramount developing a sequel to ‘World War Z’
The zombie blockbuster ‘World War Z’, starring and produced by Brad Pitt, is set to receive a sequel due to huge success at last weekend’s box-office. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Paramount will actively begin developing a sequel for the film after it earned an estimated $118 million worldwide; it earned $66 million in North America, the best opening for an original live-action film since James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, and $45.8 million from its first 25 foreign markets. The box-office figures should be a huge relief for the producers, as production on the blockbuster nearly spiralled out of control last year: the budget soared to over $170 million, five weeks of complex reshoots were required, and ‘Lost’ co-creator Damon Lindelhof was brought in for numerous script rewrites. In addition to this, ‘World War Z’ was initially set to open in December 2012, but the movie's release date was pushed back to June, prompting many to anticipate a massive loss for the film’s backers. In spite of this however, the film has taken in large box-office returns and has received much praise from critics, and is also Brad Pitt’s biggest box-office opening to date. Skydance Productions co-financed ‘World War Z’, which also was made in association with Hemisphere Media Capital and GK Films. Pitt produced via his company Plan B, with Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) directing. ‘World War Z’ is now screening in cinemas across Ireland.

Nicolas Winding Refn developing a ‘Valhalla Rising’ sequel
Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, directors of the cult hit ‘Drive’ has revealed in an interview with The Playlist that he is currently developing a sequel to his 2009 film ‘Valhalla Rising’. Starring Danish actor ‘Mads Mikkelsen’, the film is set in 1000 AD and centres on One Eye (Mikkelsen), a mute warrior of supernatural strength, who has been held prisoner by the Norse chieftain Barde. Aided by Are, a boy slave, One Eye slays his captor and together he and Are escape, and they then travel with a band of Christian Crusaders in pursuit of a Crusade. Winding Refn revealed that the sequel would see him team up with Mikkelsen once again and that the story would see the one-eyed monolith travel to Tokyo. Winding Refn's highly anticipated film, ‘Only God Forgives’, stars ‘Drive’ star Ryan Gosling and centres on Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, who sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death. A stylish, ultra-violent crime thriller, the film received mixed reviews when it was screened at Cannes last month. ‘Only God Forgives’ will hit Irish screens on August 2nd.

Watch the trailer for the Steve Jobs biopic, ‘Jobs’
Open Road Films has released the first trailer for the upcoming biopic ‘Jobs’, directed by Joshua Michael Stern and starring Ashton Kutcher as the revered entrepreneur who co-founded Apple along with Steve Wozniak. This is the first of two features to be released based on the life and times of Jobs, as another feature is also currently in development. As regards to the other biopic on Jobs, Sony picked up the book rights to the non-fiction title ‘Steve Jobs’ only two days after the death of the entrepreneur with Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin hired to pen the adaptation. With Sorkin’s project still in development, (according to Cinema Blend, the film will only have three scenes, lasting 30 minutes each) Kutcher and Stern’s biopic will be released first. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and Open Road Films came on board to distribute shortly afterwards. The film will hopefully hit Irish screens later this year.
