‘In the Name of the Republic’ Unearths Dark Secrets on TV3 this Monday, 18th March
14 Mar 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
The mystery surrounding people abducted and killed by the IRA during the War of Independence - some of whom were alleged spies and informants – forms the thread of a new two-part documentary and archaeological investigation produced by Tile Films for TV3.

‘In the Name of the Republic’, presented by Professor Eunan O'Halpin of Trinity College, delves into the forgotten stories of men and women who went missing during this turbulent period in our history.

Director Martin Dwan of Tile Films told IFTN that the first episode focuses on archaeologists attempting to locate the burial grounds of alleged victims on a 30-acre site in Co Laois.

The second episode moves to Cork where the search continues for people abducted by the IRA - in the belief that they were spies or informants for the British - in the years following the War of Independence.

Drawing upon previously-closed files in the National Archive, shocking revelations emerge as the series progress in the first such programme of its kind commissioned by TV3.

‘In the Name of the Republic’ was developed by Mr Dwan and producer Dave Farrell, with funding secured by the BAI.

The series also features dramatic reconstructions of historical events, including performances by Don Wycherley in the role of S. O'Hegarty, a hardened Republican who later became disillusioned with the violence that ensued after independence.

The production team includes D.O.P. John Fay, Editors Kevin Cooney and Michael O'Sullivan; Colourist Eugene McCrystal; Music composer Eanan Patterson; Mixer Killian Fitzgerald; Production manager Rachel Towell; and Executive Producer Stephen Rooke.

Tiles Films recently earned critical acclaim at this year’s Jameson International Film Festival, with a successful screening of their documentary-drama 'A Terrible Beauty' about the human side of the Easter 1916 Rising.

'In the Name of the Republic' starts this Monday 18th March at 9pm on TV3.
