Three Irish shorts are making waves across the globe as IFTN rounds-up the latest short film news
Frank Kelly’s ‘Raise My Hands’ continues to screen on the international festival circuit having been chosen for three additional festivals. The documentary short will screen at Maui Film Festival in Hawaii and the San Francisco Black Film Festival this week. It has also been chosen to screen at the Short Shorts Film Festival in Tokyo and the already announced Heartland Film Festival in the US in October.
’Raise My Hands’ was previously officially selected for the Byron Bay International Film Festival in Australia in March and the Sonoma International Film Festival in April.
The short is a documentary-based look at photos taken by New York photographer Scott McDermott at Nelson Mandela’s birthday party. The photos show Hollywood actors Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Forest Whitaker commemorate an oath the actors took to help do what they can to help improve the planet.
Scott McDermott is the photographer responsible for the iconic shots. Elliot Kotek wrote the script for ‘Raise My Hands’, with Kelly directing.
Jordan Ballantine’s short film ‘A House of Cards’ teaser trailer has been released ahead of its first cast and crew screening at the Lighthouse Cinema on June 18.
The short, which stars IFTA Award-winner Brendan Conroy, tells the story of a family struggling to come to terms with their mother’s illness after they reunite at a family reunion.
Mark McCabe (Sin é) and Eddie Jackson (Promised Land) wrote the script, which Ballantine (Spare Change?) directed.
Filmbase/RTÉ short film ‘Joy’ continues its successful festival run in North America, with a screening scheduled at the Seattle International Film Festival this week. The short has previously received its international premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in Texas in March, as well as screening as part of a Best of SXSW in Montreal. It screened at the Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto last week.
Neil Wallace and Emmet Fleming produced the short for Venom, which stars Jane McGrath (Pure Mule), Aoife Duffin (Behold the Lamb) and Derbhle Crotty (Notes on a Scandal). The film tells the story of 16 year-old Nicola, who has to introduce her best friend Tess to her newborn daughter who only survived for a short time.
