‘New Boy’ wins Manhatten Short Fest, post production is wrapping up on the ‘Fairycatcher’ and ‘Finscéal Pháidí’, Lorcan Finegan’s ‘Defaced’ has been selected by onedotzero for international screenings, while director Aideen McCarthy has received multiple nominations for IceWhole Awards, and short film ‘Deviant’ has recently screened on SKY TV.
Steph Green’s New Boy’ has won Best Film at this year's Manhattan Short Film Festival. Produced by Tamara Anghie for Zanzibar Films, the short was one of 12 films which screened in 115 cities, including Galway, over four continents last week. Audiences at each screening placed their votes after the screenings which were then sent back to Manhattan and results tallied.

Post Production is nearing completion on director Kealan O’Rourke’s (Before Sunrise) latest short ‘Fairycatcher’. The film was funded as part of the Irish Film Board’s flagship ‘Signature Series’ is produced by Adrian Devane and Brian Willis of Igloo Films. Based on a fairytale about fairies the short stars Des Braiden(Waiting for Dublin), Daire McCormack(King Arthur). The film was shot by Tim Fleming (Cré na Cille) on Production Depot’s 4K RED camera and has been in post production at Windmill Lane since June, with a score composed by Ronan Johnson (Home for Christmas) and sound design by Ardmore Sound. ‘Fairycatcher’ is written and directed by O’Rourke and was earlier this year named as one of the top 50 short film director’s in the world by deviantART.com.

Lorcan Finnegan's of Lovely Productions short film ‘Defaced’ has been selected by Onedotzero (adventures in moving image) to screen in their 'cityscapes' programme. The festival begins in Buenos Aires on the 26th September before moving to Zurich, followed by Moscow, before returning to London for a 3 day festival at the BFI South Bank in November. The film will then screen as part of the Onedotzero global tour over the next year, with screenings taking place at over 150 national and international events around the world.

The Filmbase / TG4 Lasair short ‘Finscéal Pháidí’ (Páidí's Tale) has also just completed post-production at Screenscene. Written and directed by Colm Bairéad and produced by Greg Corcoran for Fingers Crossed Films, this is the team behind the multi award-winning short film ‘Mac an Athar’. The action centers on 9 year-old Páidí (Darragh Corcoran) who discovers his stepfather-to-be is the evil creature from Ireland's most famous myth and sets out to sets out to follow in the footsteps of the ancient Irish warriors to save his family.

The ‘Finscéal Pháidí’ cast also includes Micheál Ó Gruagáin (Draíocht, Ros na Rún), Yvonne Ní Laife-Melo (Ros na Rún), and Paul Roe (Adam & Paul, Proof, Mac an Athar) and was also supported form Gael Linn and Foras na Gaeilge. Shot on Sony Hi-Def by DOP Fergal O'Hanlon. Camera, and grip were provided by John Leahy at the Production Depot. Editor is John Paul Shortt and post-production was carried out at Screenscene with the sound edit and mix being handled by Garret Farrell. Composer was Steve Lynch at Stellarsound. ‘Finscéal Pháidí’ will premiere at the Cork Film Festival in October.

Irish Writer/Director Aideen McCarthy has received 4 nominations for her work at the Icewhole Inaugural Quarterly Awards being held in London in October 13. Her fantasy adventure short "The Formorian" has been nominated for the "Best Short Film Shot on Film", "Best Film Score" and the “Most Original Screenplay". In addition "The Widow" also directed by McCarthy has also been nominated for the "Most Original Screenplay" award.

Finally director and producer Gerard Lough from Arcadia Video production company recently saw his 12 minute short ‘Deviant’ broadcast on Propeller on SKY TV on September 14. Filmed in Donegal, the short tells story of an urban prowler on his nightly duties. The film also screened in front of an audience for the first time at the Flat Lake Festival.
