Neasa Ni Chianain’s controversial documentary ‘Fairytale of Kathmandu’ has scooped second prize in the Original Documentary category at the Documenta Madrid film festival, which took place from the 2nd-11th May 2008. The accolade came with a €5,000 cash prize.
The controversial film, produced by Vinegar Hill productions and co-funded by RTE, documents the activities in Nepal of Irish language poet Cathal O’Searcaigh.
The film, which screened on RTE in March, has already screened at festivals in Amsterdam, Dublin, Tel Aviv, Turin and Thessaloniki, and will go on to screen at the Seattle International Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Ni Chianain is co-director of the Guth Gafa Documentary Festival, which takes place from 16th-18th May 2008 in Gortahork, County Donegal. Over the festival weekend, Ni Chianain will be interviewing some of the 22 international filmmakers whose films will screen at the fest.
