George Kane directs Back: Season Two starring Peep Show's David Mitchell & Robert Webb

Peep Show's David Mitchell & Robert Webb reunite next week for the long-awaited second series of Channel 4 sitcom Back, directed by Irish director George Kane (Crashing, Flack) for Big Talk Productions (Rev, Mum, Spaced).

The show, written and created by Emmy-winner Simon Blackwell (Veep, The Thick Of It, The Personal History Of David Copperfield), has had a tortuous route to broadcast, with its first series airing back in October 2017.

Having overcome a variety of scheduling problems, the shoot got underway in October 2019, until a serious health scare for Robert Webb derailed the production. During a routine medical, Webb's doctor discovered a heart murmur, later diagnosed as a mitral valve prolapse, which required urgent life-saving surgery. The shoot continued as long as possible without Webb until shutting down before Christmas.

After four months of recovery, Robert was ready to re-join the fray and the shoot was remounted in February 2020, until the growing pandemic forced another production shutdown with less than a week of shooting remaining.

Being one of the first productions to restart in the UK at the end of summer 2020, Back was used somewhat as a test case for Covid-friendly production, and the show finally wrapped in Pinewood Studios in September.

"The tireless efforts of producer Lyndsay Robinson over summer 2020 meant that we could finally wrap up the show, which had become somewhat of a jigsaw puzzle,” said George Kane when talking with IFTN.

“With some scenes missing, some half-shot, some shot with a body double, and then having to complete group scenes where actors wore face visors or couldn't sit closer than 2 metres apart, I had to draw quite heavily on my experience as an editor!

Ultimately, I'm quite pleased to say that a game of ‘spot the covid scenes’ would be very difficult indeed,” Kane continued. “It's a very funny follow-up to the first series and it was an absolute delight to get to work with the comedy royalty of this cast."

The sitcom airs on Channel 4 on Thursday, January 21st at 10 am and will be available to stream on All4 thereafter.

George is currently in production on series three of Sky's hit comedy-drama Brassic starring Joe Gilgun, Michelle Keegan, and Dominic West. A US remake of his BAFTA-nominated ITV sitcom Timewasters is currently being piloted by ABC and executive producer LL Cool J.
