Foyle Film Festival is one of only a handful of international festivals with Oscar affiliation and BAFTA recognition – recipients of the LIM Award qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Academy Awards without needing the standard theatrical run.
Over the past decade and a half, four different LIM competitors have all gone on to Oscar wins including Belfast director Terry George for his captivating Northern Ireland-set short ‘The Shore’ in 2012. Other filmmakers who’ve gone on to Academy Award wins after contending at the Foyle Film Festival include Martin McDonagh (‘Six Shooter’), Adam Elliot (‘Harvie Krumpet’) and most recently Laurent Witz for the beautifully animated feature ‘Mr. Hublot’ this year.
Organised by the Nerve Centre, and funded and supported by Northern Ireland Screen and Derry City Council, the Foyle Film Festival delivers a programme of documentaries, short films and feature films from all over the world, as well as a full programme of educational events for schools, youth, and adults and an array of industry networking events and panel discussions.
The festival offers filmmakers, animators and artists a unique platform to screen their films, network with industry professionals and gain access to the international market.
Foyle Film Festival is now an IMDb qualifying festival, granting all eligible film submissions a title page on IMDb.com. The three competition categories under LIM are:
- Best Short Film
- Best Animation
- Best Documentary
All entries for the 2014 festival must be submitted through the website www.withoutabox.com. Entries shortlisted for each category will be screened during this year’s festival which will take place November 18 -27. The winners will be announced before the closing night film at Brunswick, Moviebowl on Sunday, November 23.
