BAI Offers 21 Irish Television Projects €3.94m In Funding
27 Jul 2012 : By Steve Cummins
A feature film adaptation of John Banville's 'The Sea' is among the projects that have been offered funding
A €2.5m adaptation of John Banville’s Booker Prize-winning novel ‘The Sea’ and a €1.5m TV3 drama are among the 21 television productions that have been offered funding under round 14 of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound and Vision II scheme.

In total the BAI have offered television broadcasters and producers €3.94m to make animations, dramas, documentaries and entertainment shows in what is their third allocation of funding this year.

Samson Films will co-produce ‘The Sea’, a one-off feature film which will be broadcast on RTÉ. The Dublin-based production company has been offered €350,000 under the Sound and Vision II scheme, which the BAI say equates to 13 per cent of the production’s overall budget.

‘The Sea’ is one of two television dramas to be offered funding under the scheme with Galway-based Magma Productions being offered €300,000 for a one-off drama called ‘TiNKERS’ for TV3. That figure is 20 per cent of the production’s overall budget.

As well as drama, 10 documentaries, two animations, six entertainment programmes and one 26-part education series has been funded under the scheme.

The documentaries include Big Mountain Productions’ four-part series ‘The Big House’ for TV3, which has been offered €305,000, and Independent Pictures’ six-part series ‘John Lonergan’s Circus Acts’ for RTÉ One, offered €315,000.

Of the animations, Kavaleer Productions have been offered €350,000 to produce ‘Wildernuts’ for RTÉjr while Raw Nerve have been offered €185,000 to make ‘An Béal Bocht’ for TG4.

The biggest funding offer for an entertainment show was offered to Waka Productions’ six-part series ‘The Centre’ for RTÉ 2, which has been offered €330,000.

Under the BAI Sound and Vision II scheme, a total of €3.94m has been offered to broadcasters and independent producers to support the production of 21 TV projects.

Speaking about the announcement, Michael O’Keeffe, chief executive of the BAI said of the third allocation of funding under the scheme: “In 2012, to date, the Scheme has processed 616 applications and has offered, in principle, funding to 265 TV or radio projects totalling €9.88m. This is obviously a very significant amount of investment by the Scheme into the audiovisual sector, the vast majority of which goes to independent producers. The provision of this funding will result in a range of high quality television and radio projects being available to Irish audiences.”

The next closing date for the receipt of applications to the fund is September 14 at 12pm. Application forms and guidelines are available on: www.bai.ie.
