Exclusive: Film Adaptation of Colm Tóibín's 'Brooklyn' To Shoot In Ireland - Rooney Mara & Nick Hornby Attached
30 Apr 2012 : By Steve Cummins
Colm Toibin
Irish novelist Colm Tóibín’s best-selling novel ‘Brooklyn’ will be partly shot in Ireland early next year after being optioned by English production company Wildgaze Films. US actress Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) is attached to the project and Oscar-nominated English writer Nick Hornby (An Education) adapted the book for screen.

Mara has been cast in the lead role in the big-screen adaptation of Tóibín’s best-seller, which is set in New York and Ireland during the 1950s. The novel tells of a young woman torn between her family in Ireland, her new life in America and the two men who battle for her heart.

Wildgaze have confirmed to IFTN that the film will be partly shot in Ireland. They added that no details on an Irish co-producer have been made at this early stage.

The film will be produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey for Wildgaze. The producers previously worked together on ‘An Education’, which was also adapted for the screen by Hornby, who is Posey’s husband.

No director has yet been attached to the estimated €19m ($25m) adaptation, but filming is planned to get underway in spring 2013.

Oscar-nominated producers Dwyer and Posey enjoyed huge success with ‘An Education’, which was nominated for three Oscars (including Best Film), nine BAFTAs (including Best Film and Best British Film, winning Best Actress), six BIFAs (winning Best Actress) and won Best Foreign Film at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Dwyer is currently in post-production on Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut 'Quartet', from a script by Oscar-winner Ronald Harwood starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins.

Dwyer and Posey’s forthcoming productions include an adaptation by Jack Thorne of Nick Hornby’s best-selling novel 'A Long Way Down', which Pascal Chaumeil (Heartbreaker) is directing. Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette and Emile Hirsch are attached to star.

Posey has previously worked for Stephen Woolley in Ireland on Neil Jordan’s Oscar-winning ‘The Crying Game’
