Steve McQueen’s Northern Irish feature film ‘Hunger’, depicting the final six weeks of the life of IRA hunger striker’s Bobby Sands, has secured multiple sales deals at the Cannes Film Festival.
Pathe have acquired all rights for the UK and Ireland with MK2 on board for French distribution. Paradiso in Benelux, Lusomondo in Portugal, Video Seven in Greece and Icon in Australia and New Zealand have also signed deals with the film’s sales agent Icon Entertainment Intl. at the French Festival. A U.S. deal looks set to be confirmed shortly.
Shot on location in Northern Ireland in 2007, ‘Hunger’ is co-written by award-winning writer Enda Walsh (Disco Pigs) and stars Michael Fassbender (300), Liam Cunningham (The Wind that Shakes the Barley), Stuart Graham (Small Engine Repair), Liam McMahon (Northanger Abbey) and Lalor Roddy (Middletown).
The film received a standing ovation following its premiere screening as the opening film for the Cannes Un Certain Regard strand and has generated significant buzz around the market.
Produced by Laura Hastings Smith of London based Blast! Films, ‘Hunger’ is co-financed by Film4, the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, Northern Ireland Screen and the Wales Creative IP fund.
