The Frameworks film ‘Among Strangers’ was nominated for Best Animation at the Birds-Eye-View Festival in London last week. This follows on from the win for the short at the Aubagne International Film Festival in April, where it won Best Animation.
The Aubagne festival focuses in particular on the quality of sound and music in film. All films must have an original musical score to qualify for selection into the festival and all the jury are professionals who work in the area of sound for film.
The sound design and score for ‘Among Strangers’ was done by Brian Doyle at Loophead Studio in West Clare, which he runs with director/animator Naomi Wilson. Loophead Studio’s credits include Frameworks titles ‘Twilight’ (produced with Metropolitan Films), ‘Rehy Fox’ and ‘Among Strangers’.
The Studio is based in West Clare. Both Naomi and Brian work with materials and influences of their surroundings; ‘Twilight’ was made with debris collected from the beach, ‘Rehy Fox’ and ‘Among Strangers’ were made using drawings in sand from the beach. The sounds were all recorded locally, and the voices by people living in West Clare. The music was composed, played and recorded by Doyle in his studio.
